Safe. Adaptable. Durable.
Panelized Shelter Solutions for Displaced Populations and Refugees
The Concept
Mawa Modular (from the Arabic word for shelter) provides a sustainable solution to address the shelter needs of displaced populations and refugees. The kit-of-parts of panels are easy to assemble, disassemble, expand, and reuse to meet the adapting needs of a displaced community while minimizing waste and reliance on central infrastructure. The modules are designed to be safe, cost-effective, and off-grid. Additional use cases exist for slum dwellings and low-income communities expanding the potential application and impact of Mawa Modular.
Characteristics
Adaptable
The kit-of-parts allows for ease of assembly and disassembly. The shelters are upgradable, expandable, and relocatable.
Durable
The shelters are designed to last 20+ years. They can be disassembled and reused as needed.
Safe
Fire safety. Lockable windows and doors.
Sustainable
Long lasting, recyclable materials, solar powered.
Cost-effective
As compared to existing solutions that need to be replaced every 1-5 years.
Innovative Business Model
We provide shelter-as-a-service. Mawa will be there for exactly as long as it is needed.
Who We Are
We are a team of engineers and designers from Stanford University, the University of California Berkeley, Yale University, and Duke University leveraging innovations in civil engineering and mechanical engineering, and applying design thinking, to address the shelter needs of displaced populations worldwide.
We now face the largest displacement of humans in history, 70.8 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, 25.9 million of whom are refugees. We now know that the average stay of a refugee in a refugee camp is over 17 years. Our goal is to address their shelter needs and provide safe, adaptable, and durable solutions. With the support of StartX and the TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy, we are bringing our designs from idea to reality.
